Exploring Telehealth Services for Mental Health Support

Updated: Mar 20

Getting support for your mental health used to mean one thing: travelling to a clinic, sitting in a waiting room, and hoping you'd picked the right provider. For many Australians — especially those living outside major cities, those managing busy family or work lives, or those for whom walking into a psychology practice still carries stigma — that model created more barriers than it removed.

Telehealth has changed that. And at JAZE Health, it's been one of the most meaningful shifts we've seen in how people access care.

What Is Telehealth for Mental Health?

Telehealth refers to the delivery of psychological services via video call or telephone rather than in person. At JAZE Health, we offer telehealth sessions for individuals, couples, and families across Australia — providing the same evidence-based care you'd receive in clinic, from wherever you are.

This might mean a video session from your home office, your car during a lunch break, or a quiet room while the kids are napping. The therapeutic work is the same. The setting just works around your life.

Who Benefits Most from Telehealth Psychology?

Telehealth isn't a lesser version of care — for many people, it's actually the better option. Those who tend to benefit most include:

People in regional, rural, or remote areas where access to registered psychologists is limited or requires significant travel.

Busy parents and carers who struggle to find childcare or time away from home for appointments.

People experiencing anxiety, agoraphobia, or social anxiety for whom leaving the house is itself a significant stressor — and who may find the comfort of their own space therapeutic.

Those managing chronic illness or disability for whom travel or clinic environments are physically difficult.

Anyone who simply finds video or phone sessions more accessible — there's no requirement to prefer in-person care.

Does Telehealth Actually Work?

The short answer is yes. A substantial body of research confirms that psychological therapy delivered via telehealth produces outcomes comparable to face-to-face therapy across a range of conditions, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, and stress.

Research has found that video-based CBT is as effective as in-person CBT for depression and anxiety. The Australian Psychological Society (APS) supports the broad adoption of telehealth, citing strong evidence for its effectiveness.

The therapeutic relationship — the quality of connection between client and psychologist — is the most powerful predictor of good therapy outcomes. And that relationship can be built just as meaningfully over video as it can in a room.

Accessing Telehealth Through JAZE Health

JAZE Health offers telehealth psychology sessions for clients across Australia. To access Medicare rebates for psychology, you'll need a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) from your GP. As of November 2025, this referral should come from your MyMedicare-registered GP or your usual GP. Under Medicare's Better Access initiative, you can access up to 10 subsidised sessions per calendar year.

Book online at jazehealth.com.au. We offer morning, daytime, and evening appointments via a secure, encrypted video platform — no downloads required. All you need is a device with a camera and a private space.

The current Medicare rebate for sessions with a registered psychologist is $98.95. Out-of-pocket costs will vary based on the individual fee.

A Note on Privacy

At JAZE Health, we use platforms that comply with Australian privacy legislation, and our psychologists are bound by the ethical guidelines of the APS and the Psychology Board of Australia. Your sessions are confidential.

We recommend a quiet, private space for your session — even sitting in your car can work well — and using headphones to improve audio quality and privacy.

If you've been putting off getting support because it felt logistically hard, telehealth might be the thing that removes that barrier. Book a session at jazehealth.com.au or contact us with any questions.
